Paediatric Intensive Care Unit

The Portland Hospital offers extensive Critical Care Facilities for children up to the age of 16 which means that we are fully equipped to treat many complex and specialist areas of paediatric care.

Our purpose built, 7 bedded, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), launched in November 2011, is supported by a team of experienced Paediatric Intensive Care Consultants from the UK’s largest children’s teaching hospital. It is a level 3 PICU which is the highest intensive care level available, meaning that it can treat child patients requiring support for multi-organ failure and/or advanced respiratory support.

Utilising the expert skills of the Surgeons, Intensivists and specialist Intensive Care Nurses we can care for children undergoing major surgery as well as acutely and chronically unwell children admitted for medical assessment and treatments. The unit offers support for specialties including spinal surgery, neurology, ENT, urology, gastroenterology and orthopaedics.
