The Portland hospital

The Portland Hospital rated 'Good' by the CQC

27 June 2017

The Portland Hospital for Women and Children, part of HCA Healthcare UK, has been rated good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The 96-bed hospital with dedicated neonatal and paediatric intensive care units is the UK’s only private hospital dedicated to the healthcare of women and children, providing high quality complex care across paediatrics, maternity and women’s health.

Paediatric Care

Across the broad range of paediatric services, from outpatient care to complex procedures the CQC found that the Portland provides patient-centred care delivered by highly trained compassionate staff.

The Portland was praised for its commitment to reporting and learning to ensure that it is continually improving and always working to provide tailored individual care. The CQC also noted;

  • The Portland has a ‘highly effective’ multi-disciplinary team in place to help guide the care of complex patients. These teams bring together clinical experts involved in a patient’s care to make the best decision about how treatment should go forward and are an example of best practice

  • On the paediatric intensive care wards there is one-to-one nursing care in place, providing individualised care

  • The hospital provides innovative and specialist treatment including acute neurorehabilitation and Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), which you can read more about here.

Maternity Care

Maternity care was found to provide patients with flexibility and choice in their care and delivery with the ability to provide care for mothers-to-be with complex needs. The CQC also found that:

  • The maternity wards are well staffed with consultant medical support available seven days a week and one-to-one care during labour

  • That women are supported and encouraged in their decision to breast feed, and that the hospital has an 80% breast feeding initiation rate, which is higher than the national average

  • A strong culture of learning with information regarding patient care, treatment and clinical outcomes were routinely collected, monitored and used to establish how care could be improved.

Across the hospital, the “approachable and supportive” executive team cultivated a caring environment centred on providing the best care to patients, staff input was encouraged and valued and staff felt facilitated to provide compassionate, high quality care throughout the hospital.

Aida Yousefi, CEO of The Portland Hospital, said:

“The Portland Hospital is unique in the UK private sector for our specialist focus on providing paediatrics, maternity and women’s health. We are very proud to have received outstanding results and recognition for our outpatients and diagnostic services and the responsiveness to our patients’ needs.

“The CQC’s recognition of our ability to innovate and introduce pioneering new procedures such as SDR and our strong learning culture reflects our commitment to continual improvement. Although there are no areas requiring immediate improvement, we are looking closely at the CQC’s recommendations to ensure that we are always delivering the best possible care to our patients”. CQC officials inspected across the broad range of services offered at the hospital from the most complex care right through to outpatient and imaging services. The core services reviewed were: surgery, maternity care, services for children and young people and outpatients and diagnostic imaging.
