• What happens during the procedure? icon plus

  Hysteroscopic sterilisation is usually done under local anaesthetic, which numbs the area to block any pain while the inserts are fitted. The procedure itself takes around ten minutes. Your consultant will place the inserts into each fallopian tube with the help with a thin, flexible telescope called a hysteroscope.
  
  The hysteroscope is gently guided through your vagina and cervix and into your uterus — so there are no cuts or scars to worry about.

• How to prepare icon plus

  Because the procedure is permanent, hysteroscopic sterilisation is only recommended if you're certain that you don't want to have any — or any more — children. Your consultant will let you know what to expect and answer any questions you may have.
  
  If you'll be having general anaesthetic, they'll let you know how long you should avoid eating and drinking before the procedure. Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you.

• After you procedure icon plus

  Hysteroscopic sterilisation is usually done as an outpatient procedure, meaning you should be able to go home shortly afterwards. It's normal to experience some mild cramping or discharge after the procedure, but this shouldn't last long. Because the inserts contain no hormones, your periods generally won't be affected.
  
  It takes around three months for your body to form a natural barrier around the inserts. You'll return for a follow-up test after three months to confirm that the inserts are placed correctly and functioning as they should be. It's important to use another form of birth control until you've had this follow-up test.
