Dr Mike Thomson is a Paediatric Gastroenterologist and Honorary Reader at the Centre for Paediatric Gastroenterology in Sheffield. He graduated from Aberdeen Medical School in 1985 and started paediatric gastroenterology training in 1987/8. In the early 1990s he spent five years working in Australia, as a Clinical Research Fellow in gastroenterology and cystic fibrosis at the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation in Brisbane with Prof Ross Shepherd. While there he was awarded his Medical Doctorate on cystic fibrosis genetics and energy expenditure.
Dr Thomson's interests include endoscopy training and interventional endoscopy. His first position when he moved back to the UK was as a Child Health Lecturer in the Liver Transplant Unit at Birmingham Children's Hospital with Prof Deirdre Kelly. He was subsequently, in 1995, appointed as a Consultant at the Royal Free Hospital at the Unit of one of the founders of modern day paediatric gastroenterology, Prof John Walker-Smith. He is also leads ESPGHAN Endoscopy Working Group. He has organized and runs the only Hands-On Paediatric Endoscopy Training Courses world wide. He has pioneered the use of minimally invasive endoscopic treatments for reflux in childhood over the past 10 years. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles including many original research studies in the area of infant and childhood gastro-oesophageal reflux, and also over 30 invited reviews, and heads a large research group. He is author of over 40 Paediatric GI Chapters in International Textbooks and is co-author of 7 paediatric textbooks including the standard text for MRCPCH, ‘Concise Paediatrics’. He is co-editing the textbook which will become the standard for the paediatric oesophagus and stomach at present.
He lives in the Peak District amidst stunning countryside. Fell running, climbing, skiing, and mountain biking are amongst his interests, and he is married with 3 gorgeous daughters.
