Biography

Mr Sivakumar is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, The Royal Free Hospital in London and The Portland Hospital for Women and Children.

He graduated from the Royal Free Medical School in 1998 which included a bachelor of sciences degree in Anatomy at University College London. After 3 years of training in general surgery he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS) in 2001. He then embarked upon his plastic surgical training which included a 2 year higher post-graduate Doctorate in Medicine (MD) carried out at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, part of Imperial College and the RAFT institute of Plastic Surgery. His research was sponsored by a Royal College of Surgeons Research Award and examined the causes for tendon and joint damage in hands affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis. He has published extensively in both scientific and clinical journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the American and European Journals of Hand Surgery. He has also presented at both national and international meetings and has received an international research award at the European Conference of Scientists and Plastic Surgeons (ECSAPS) in 2005.

Mr Sivakumar completed his plastic surgical training in the UK which has included over 10 years of trauma and elective hand surgery experience in plastic surgical units including  Mount Vernon, East Grinstead, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals. After this he embarked upon a comprehensive programme of sub-speciality training in congenital hand surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts, the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, Capetown and the ‘Institut de La Main’ Paris. As a result he has trained with numerous specialist paediatric hand surgeons from both orthopaedic and plastic surgical backgrounds in world renowned centres of excellence.

Mr Sivakumar gained the specialist fellowship in Plastic Surgery (FRCS Plast) in 2010 and was entered on the General Medical Council Register for Plastic Surgery in 2011.

Mr Sivakumar is actively involved in teaching at a postgraduate level participating in Royal College of Surgeons instructional courses and lecturing to specialist plastic surgical trainees from the UK and abroad.

He is currently a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children where his main interests are congenital and paediatric hand surgery. In addition he is an honorary senior lecturer at the Institute for Child Health. He is also involved in reconstructive surgery of the upper limb following trauma and cancer surgery as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital in London.
