Harmony and Panorama Tests

Non Invasive Prenatal Testing

The Portland Hospital offers non invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) including the Harmony or Panorama test. These tests allow the measurement of fetal DNA in the mother’s blood and can be used to detect the three most common chromosomal birth defects Down’s, Edwards and Patau’s Syndrome.

This new test is simple, safe and accurate and has a high detection rate for these three disorders:

This test can be used in conjunction with Nuchal translucency and can reassure parents-to-be that there is a reduced chance of the major chromosomal abnormalities listed above.

NIPT can be undertaken if you have missed your combined test or if you have had a positive result and would like a more accurate second opinion before you make up your mind to undertake an invasive procedure with the associated risk of miscarriage (1%).

This test does not replace the invasive tests such as Amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus sampling and you will still need to have one of these procedures if the results of the NIPT are positive to confirm your baby has one of these conditions. It also does not replace your ultrasound scans which are used to detect physical defects within your baby.

If you require any further information please contact the Ultrasound department on 020 7390 6351.
