Delivery Rates
The Portland Hospital provides a safe and reassuring environment for maternity care with 1,961 babies born in 2009. Our increasingly popular midwifery led delivery service, which advocates the benefits of developing close relationships with a midwife, maintains a vaginal delivery rate of 77%.
Our consultant obstetricians are amongst the leading practitioners in their field, often attracting mothers-to-be whose pregnancy may encounter medical complications or those who are privately insured. This contributes to our planned Caesarean section rate of 36%, with emergency Caesareans contributing to 16% of all births at The Portland Hospital in 2009. Our overall delivery rate for vaginal births is 48% for 2009.
Of the women choosing The Portland Hospital for their maternity care, 87% were over 31 years of age, an age ratio which is higher than average NHS units.
