Mammography
Mammography is an X-ray examination of your breasts and is the best method of detecting early breast cancer and the extent of development.
A specialist Breast Consultant will review the images and determine the need for ultrasound and any interventional work such as core biopsy or fine needle aspiration. Patients are offered the opportunity to proceed directly to these additional procedures immediately or they can choose to book for another day if they prefer. Patients should be aware that if additional tests are advised that this does not necessarily mean that there is an abnormality.
A full Breast Assessment Service is available all day Tuesday and Thursday at The Portland Hospital. This can be achieved in a single visit for symptomatic patients requiring clinical assessment.
Patient Preparation
- Please do not wear any deodorant or talcum powder.
- Try not to wear a dress. Ideally please wear separates.
- Please bring your old films with you.
- It is advisable to come for a mammogram when your breasts are least tender (i.e. after your period).
- Please be prepared to wait on clinic days (Tuesdays and Thursdays).
- Also, you should be advised that you maybe in the department for up to an hour.
