Paediatric Imaging Services
MRI
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanning is a patient-friendly means of investigating musculo-skeletal, spinal and bone disorders. Parents can accompany their child into the scan room and even lie on the table with them if required.
In cases where the paediatric patient cannot remain still for the duration of the MRI scan, a General Anaesthetic (GA) may be required. This can be arranged by your referring clinician directly with the MRI department. A specialist Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist is available for these cases. This is supported by specialist Paediatric Anaesthetic Assistants, Recovery Staff and Nurses. All staff in the area are specifically trained to meet the needs of children of all ages.
MRI uses magnets, radio waves and computers to create extremely detailed images of the human anatomy. It does not involve radiation or radioactive substances and is a non-invasive procedure. This means it is one of the safest methods of diagnostic investigation available today.
The suite provides a day case self-contained scanning service that allows patients to be admitted and discharged directly from the suite. The Portland Hospital MRI unit offers a personalised service to meet patient’s specific needs.
The MRI unit is supported by a team of specialist Consultants including Paediatric and Neuro Radiologists
