Sensory Integration is the way that our minds and bodies register, process and integrate then respond to information about what our bodies are doing and the environment around us.
Everything that we do requires our brains to process and provide an appropriate response to a vast amount of sensory information. This information comes from our senses (vision, hearing, touch, taste, proprioception) and our vestibular system. In some situations and with some neurological conditions these responses are inappropriate and in some cases they are insufficient.
Sensory processing disorders can often be found (but not always) in children with behavioural problems, learning disorders, autistic spectrum disorders and global developmental delay.
Our sensory integration programme, available on an outpatient basis, is run by an occupational therapist specifically trained in delivering Sensory Integration programmes. Each programme will be tailored to the needs of the individual with the aim of improving the processing of sensory input and gaining the appropriate response.
