Play and Music Therapy
Giving children and young people opportunities to play is a vital part of a child’s care and recovery. Our play therapists provide an essential role in preparing children for surgery or treatment and we have a whole host of toys and stimulatory equipment to aid recovery and development.
Our team support every service within the hospital in order to ensure that children are comfortable at all times and supported through any procedures that they may have to undergo, from blood tests to MRI scans. They are also an essential part of the inpatient service, providing emotional and developmental support to children, siblings and families throughout their stay either through individual sessions or group play.
Music can have a beneficial effect on children’s emotional well being and engages more areas of the brain than speech alone. At the Portland we also provide specialist music therapists via ‘Sing and Grow’ (www.singandgrow.org.uk) to encourage social skills, sharing and turntaking, as well as strengthening interactions with others, building up confidence and having fun.
