Choosing a trusted Consultant Obstetrician and Midwife-led team who can safely guide you through your pregnancy is naturally a top priority at such an exciting and life-changing time.
At The Portland Hospital we understand finding the right team for you and your baby can leave you feeling a little overwhelmed; not only do you want the very best level of care and advice but you also want someone you can fully trust and who understands your personal choices and the maternity services that you need. Ultimately you want to feel reassured that you are always in the safest of medical hands.
Here we introduce you to Dr Lorin Lakasing, one of many top Consultant Obstetricians at The Portland Hospital, to give you an insight into her own life as a busy mum and medical professional and the reasons why she decided to be a Consultant Obstetrician.
“I wasn’t from a medical background, but knew I wanted to do something sciencey with the extra dimension of humanity. I started out in research but missed the aspect of patient care, and obstetrics is particularly interesting because you take care of women from all walks of life”, said Lorin.
“When I was pregnant I trusted my midwife and obstetrician to look after me and never interfered. They were the professionals and I was the patient.
Having a baby is an entirely personal journey for every woman. Women want what’s best for their baby and become extremely motivated and passionate in these circumstances – I want to harness that energy and commitment to help them”.
Lorin explains, “For me managing the family and work has been a case if being incredibly organised and focussed. It helps to love the work you so, so you don’t burn out. And for me having an equally hard-working partner was essential. You both need to be good role models for your children. We’ve been lucky enough to always have robust childcare and grand-parents as back up.
Luckily my kids are really proud of what I do. In the past I’ve left birthday parties to attend to a haemorrhaging woman, but my children have never said “Mummy where were you?”
I’ve had a private obstetric practice for over 9 years and am involved in the clinical audit and the development of clinical guidelines at the Portland Hospital.
This year our doors will have been open to the public for over 30 years so it’s a very exciting time to be working here. The hospital always adapts and has changed so much in just the past couple of years and it continues to grow and improve, making it a safe and memorable place for women to choose to have their babies.
