The cervical cancer screening test (smear test) is a routine examination recommended for all women in the UK aged 25 years and over.
It is a simple, safe and effective way of detecting pre-cancerous cells in the cervix that can become cancerous over time if left untreated. At The Portland Hospital tests are carried out in our dedicated nurse led clinic where a sample of cells is collected from the lining of the cervix by our nurse specialists.
The test is carried out by inserting an instrument called a speculum inside the vagina and collecting cells with a small soft brush. The cells are then sent to a cytology laboratory and analysed for cell changes and abnormalities. Results will be available within 24 - 48 hours.
Raising the importance of early detection
Early detection of abnormal cells is key to survival from cervical cancer but despite the availability of screening tests, the cervical cancer charity, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, says the uptake of cervical cancer screening tests is falling year on year.
Because early detection is so important in both preventing cancer and increasing the chances of surviving the disease, The Portland Hospital will be reducing the price of cervical cancer screening tests during Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (25th - 31st January 2015).
During this week all cervical cancer screening tests will be available for just £60, half the usual price.
