#Smear for Smear 23rd January – 28th January 2017
The Portland hospital is supporting Jo’s cervical cancer trust by offering half price smear tests for one week only during Cervical Cancer Prevention Week from Monday 23rd January until Saturday 28th January 2017.
Anna Barbour, Gynaecology Outpatient Sister at The Portland Hospital has over 12 years’ experience as a nurse colposcopist and has seen many patients whom have been referred to colposcopy for abnormal smears. Some of these patients are referred after their first smear which is usually after their 25th birthday.

Anna performs colposcopy, takes biopsies and provides treatment where necessary. Patients with high grade abnormalities require excisional treatment called a LLETZ to remove the abnormality under local anaesthetic in the colposcopy clinic. Any patients receiving treatment will receive a follow-up appointment six months post treatment and in 95% of patients their smear and HPV virus are back to normal.
Jo’s cervical cancer trust highlights the facts regarding cervical cancer:
- Every day in the UK 9 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer
- 3 women lose their lives from the disease every day
- Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women aged 35
- 75% of cervical cancers are prevented by cervical screening
- 1 in 4 women do not attend this potentially life-saving smear test
Anna understands the importance of awareness and prevention as by not going for cervical screening is the biggest risk factor for developing cervical cancer. She runs a very friendly and reassuring colposcopy clinic at the Portland and is known for putting patients at ease, who are sometimes very frightened by answering any questions they may have.
The Portland Hospital is offering smear teats at the discounted rate of £66 for Cervical Cancer Prevention Week during 23rd-28th January 2017. The clinic is open between 8am-7:30pm Monday to Friday and Saturday morning from 8am-1pm.
Your results will be available within 24-48hrs. Anna will personally contact patients with their results and discuss any concerns they may have.
