Mr Imran Mushtaq Consultant Paediatric Urologist, The Portland Hospital
Q. My 5 year old son wets the bed, are there any steps I can do to help him stop?
A. There are some simple things you can do to help. Be positive and don‘t make a big deal about the problem. When he wets the bed, get him involved in a very matter of fact way in dealing with the wet pyjamas and bedclothes. Make sure he drinks plenty of fluids during the day, not just in the evening when he comes home. You could speak to his teacher about this. Do not lift him to go to the toilet in the night because his bladder won’t learn to recognize the signals that it is full during the night. There are two main treatment options. One is a bed alarm system. Either a sensor mat that fits under the sheet, or a body alarm that fits into underwear. As soon as a child begins to wet the bed, the alarm sounds. The idea is a child wakes up and goes to the toilet. You could also try medication to help concentrate the urine at night.
