What is Midwife Led Maternity Care?
The Portland Hospital’s Midwife Led Maternity Care provides women with access to our highly experienced midwives who can help them to achieve the natural birth they want. This service is available to women expecting a low risk pregnancy and is available from 10, 20 or 30 weeks gestation.
What services are included in Midwife Led Maternity Care at The Portland Hospital?
Women who opt for Midwife Led Maternity Care will have access to 24 hour midwifery advice, antenatal appointments with our dedicated midwifery team, ultrasound scans, all routine pregnancy blood tests and a midwife-led birth (supported by an obstetrician if necessary). Alongside this all Midwife Led patients are allocated a dedicated consultant during their pregnancy in case of any complications.
After delivery they will have a 24 hour stay in our private postnatal rooms where a bed will be provided for the birthing partner and our midwives will be on hand to help care for new-born babies. They will also receive a new-born baby check from our Residential Medical Officer, a consultation with our breast feeding specialist, a postnatal physiotherapy consultation and a six week postnatal health check.
How safe is Midwife Led Maternity Care?
The Portland Hospital places a high emphasis on safety to ensure that no matter what level of maternity care a mother opts for, she and her baby are provided with the highest standards of healthcare quality and safety. You can find out about the safety facilities at The Portland Hospital here.
During appointments with the dedicated Consultant Obstetrician they will check that the pregnancy is progressing routinely. If it becomes apparent the pregnancy has become complicated and it is no longer suitable for a woman to receive Midwife Led Maternity Care, they will be placed under the care of the Consultant Obstetrician for the remainder of their pregnancy for routine care and the delivery of their baby.
Can anyone opt to have Midwife Led Maternity Care?
No, Midwife Led Maternity Care is only available for women who have an uncomplicated medical history and wish for a natural delivery with or without pain relief. To ascertain their eligibility for Midwife Led Maternity Care, women will be risk assessed to confirm that their pregnancy is low risk and unlikely to develop complications.
