15 September 2011 | Mrs Ray Fagan | Midwifery Led Team Leader | The Portland Hospital
Ray Fagan is the Midwife Led Leader at The Portland Hospital and has worked within the Midwifery Led Delivery (MLD) team for 5 years. She previously worked as a midwifery led coordinator in Scotland for 15 years.
A significant highlight of my career was witnessing the first water-birth in Scotland. I was the midwifery led coordinator of the first NHS midwifery unit in Scotland which had a birthing pool that both women and midwives came from near and far to visit.
I also worked as a labour ward sister for many years. Part of my role involved bringing women from the islands to the mainland for birth if complications arose and I did that in a two-seater plane or noisy RAF helicopter, which was scary at times!
I am very lucky to have the best job at the Portland in which I lead a team of five midwives who are experienced and dedicated to helping women birth their babies. The Midwifery Led Delivery (MLD) team care for low risk women with a singleton pregnancy.
At the Portland the MLD team look after women who are already mums and who have chosen to have their second baby with us. We encourage our women to book as early as possible in order for us to begin planning an individualised care plan for them.
Our aim is to ‘empower’ women in making choices for their pregnancy, labour and birth experience. We celebrate their pregnancy by continuing to provide expert clinical care, compassion and support throughout the antenatal period, labour and the birth itself.
Women who have previously had traumatic or unfulfilled birth experiences often book with us and our aim is to help them heal their emotional scars and to prepare and embrace the arrival of their next baby.
Nicola Simmons chose the MLD team at the Portland for the delivery of her second baby. Here she speaks of her experience:
‘From the minute I met the Portland team I felt safe and secure in the knowledge that they were just as concerned about me and my feelings as they were about ensuring my baby would be delivered in a safe and pretty impressive environment!
All I can say is ‘wow’. My expectations were not only met, but totally exceeded, from the quality of care…to the food, from the newly refurbished room…to the friendliness of all the staff. I left The Portland after an incredible 48 hours feeling happy, spoilt and most importantly relaxed and ready to enjoy my new little daughter. A ‘thank you’ will never be enough… to the midwives, nurses and the entire Portland team.’
We support and facilitate each and every mother’s individual choice during labour and birth,
Our primary aim is the safety of the mother and their baby. This support is available to women who decide to labour and birth in our water pool or who wish to have a lotus birth.
We encourage active birth with birthing balls in every delivery suite and provide support and encouragement for women using hypnobirthing techniques. Likewise we support women who choose other methods of pain relief like gas-and-air or mobile epidurals which are administered by our onsite 24-hour anaesthetists.
We accommodate for working mums with our planned schedule of appointments which are flexible and available five days a week from early morning to late evening. This includes ultrasound visits, active-birth workshops and one-to-one debriefing and counselling should the need arise.
The Portland midwifery team is accessible to parents-to-be 24-hours a day and together we grow to know the mother, her family and help parents prepare for their little new addition. Parents will have the opportunity to meet all of the midwives during antenatal care appointments and get to know the midwife who is proposed to look after them in labour.
We have access to full medical back up within the hospital with referral pathways to other healthcare professionals i.e. consultant obstetricians, fetal medicine consultants, consultant paediatricians, physiotherapists, and osteopaths if necessary.
The birth of your baby is important to us and we are privileged to be part of it. We strive to meet all of the expectations of both you and your family with clinical expertise, compassion and enjoyment as we help you birth your very special baby. At the Portland we believe the delivery of your second or subsequent baby is equally as important and precious as your first delivery.
With our support you will have the confidence and courage to achieve a normal, natural and healthy birth at The Portland Hospital.
Your reward is a beautiful baby. Our reward is the look of joy on the faces of you and your family.
