Although The Portland Hospital is the only dedicated private hospital for women and children in the UK, we recognise how important Dads are when it comes to hospital treatment. Whether they are excitedly witnessing the birth of their child in our labour suites or holding their infant’s hand as they undergo treatment, Dads are omnipresent across our wards and throughout our medical team.
With Father’s Day around the corner, Father of three, and Consultant Gastroenterologist at The Portland Hospital, Dr Mike Thomson gives us an insight into his life as both Dad and Doctor and shares the reasons why he became a Consultant.
Gastroenterology has always been an interest of mine but I decided to specialise in this discipline simply because it is something I know I can make a difference in. Not only can I diagnose problems and sort them out, but if needed I can do all the more sophisticated investigations like endoscopy and colonoscopy. I also chose to specialise in Children’s services because it is so satisfying to be able to offer effective treatment that benefits not just the patient but their entire family.
At The Portland Hospital we see the treatment process as a journey and I know that with each patient you may need to take a different path. Once I’ve made a diagnosis I will treat initially with medicine or dietary advice and then monitor my patient’s progress. If necessary I can then use my expertise to follow up on their treatment with further tests or a minimally invasive treatment
I have performed operations on patients ranging from the tiniest pre-term infants to near adults aged 16-19 but, despite having practised gastroenterology for more than 24 years, I am still amazed and excited about the work that we carry out at The Portland Hospital.
My work at The Portland Hospital
It’s such an incredibly exciting time to be working in the Gastroenterology Department at The Portland Hospital. Not only are we increasingly working towards carrying out pioneering techniques such as scar-less surgery, but having worked at The Portland Hospital for the past 18 years I am really looking forward to celebrating the hospital’s 30th Anniversary.
During my time here I’ve seen The Portland Hospital go from strength to strength with the new PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) and paediatric day case unit.
Parent and Consultant
As a parent of three young girls I know going to hospital can be a daunting experience for both parent and child, but I truly believe that The Portland Hospital offers a safe, friendly and effective environment for our young patients and the services should be praised and celebrated.
Whilst it can be a juggling act being both Dad and Doctor, being a Father has made my job all in all a more enjoyable experience. I am so determined to gain a positive outcome for my patients and their parents.
My daughters love to hear how I’m making children better and my enthusiasm for my job must have rubbed off at home as my middle child is not too far away from taking her GSCEs and already contemplating becoming a Doctor.
