Medical attention, no matter how minor it is, is not something to be rushed. That being said, when your child is in need of hospital care it can be reassuring to know that some procedures can be performed in a matter of hours, and can have almost instantaneous results. Here are just a few of the treatments that can be performed in a day within the Paediatric Day Case Unit at The Portland Hospital.
If your baby has a suspected tongue tie they can struggle to feed and this can be a frustrating experience for both mother and child. If you are worried that tongue-tie may be interfering with your baby’s feeding there is help available at the Tongue-Tie Clinic which takes place every Monday at The Portland Hospital. During these appointments our Consultant Paediatric ENT Surgeon, Mrs Helen Caulfield will release your baby’s tongue-tie without the need for anaesthetic and our lactation nurses will also be on hand to make sure that after the procedure your baby can feed with ease.
If your baby is under the age of 8 weeks and you would like them to be circumcised this short procedure can be performed at The Portland Hospital’s Baby Circumcision Clinic. The procedure is usually performed under anaesthetic within The Day Case Unit. Once the operation is completed your baby will be discharged with a prescription for pain relief, and often no follow-up appointment is required.
Are you considering protecting your child from seasonal flu? At The Portland Hospital’s Paediatric Day Case Unit our nurses run a weekly flu clinic. Here, either the nasal or the injectable flu vaccine is safely administered in a process that usually takes no longer than 15 minutes and can help to protect your child from this year’s flu virus.
‘Ear Buddies’ are small splints that are inserted into young childrens’ ears to help correct ear deformities. Applying ‘Ear Buddies’ can be fiddly but to ensure they are fitted correctly Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr David Gault, creator of the ‘Ear Buddies’ system, is available for consultations and fittings every Friday at The Portland Hospital.
Paediatric allergies can be difficult to detect but there is a way to find out for certain if your child has a food allergy and what it may be to. The Allergy Challenge Testing Service is based at The Portland Hospital’s Day Case Unit and is where our leading allergists can conduct carefully controlled food tests to find out what allergens are triggering your child’s allergy. Usually this procedure is carried out by a Portland Specialist Allergy Nurse who will gently introduce food groups to your child and monitor them for any symptoms of an allergic reaction. This takes place within the safe environment of the hospital where expert help is on hand should a severe allergic reaction develop.
