Throughout this week, all cervical cancer screening tests will be available at The Portland Hospital for £66.
With cervical cancer being the most common cancer in women under 35, women are invited to attend their first smear test around the age of 25.
Attending cervical screening can prevent 75% of cervical cancers in the UK, however as many as one in four women don’t attend their appointment when invited for screening.
As part of Cervical Screening Awareness Week, The Portland Hospital will be offering the service at a reduced fee of £66 from the 13th -19th June.
Anna Barbour, Gynaecology Outpatients Sister at The Portland Hospital, heads the nurse-led clinic for cervical screening and will be available to answer any questions that may concern you.
“I see patients who have been referred for a colposcopy for abnormal smears. Some of these patients are referred after their first smear which is usually after their 25th birthday.”
“After taking the patient’s medical history I undertake a colposcopy, which is looking at the cervix with a colposcope to check for any abnormalities.”
Sometimes patients require a biopsy, which is taking a small piece of tissue from the cervix to send to the laboratory. The majority of patients have low grade abnormality and don’t require any treatment - these patients will be monitored in the clinic until their smear returns to normal, which can take 18-24 months.
The abnormality is caused by a virus called the human papilloma virus (HPV) which usually clears itself by the immune system, but in some case the virus persists and may cause cervical abnormalities.
“Your results will be available within 24-48 hours and I will personally contact you with the results, and discuss any concerns you may have. If required, I will be able to assist you in a necessary referral.” adds Anna Barbour.
“Rachel King and Chiho Ito are also qualified in smear taking and will be available to help out to ensure that patients can be seen at short notice for smear screening.”
The clinic will be open 8am-7:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Friday and 8am-1pm on Saturday morning.
