Baby massage classes at The Portland Hospital can be a great way to bond with your infant in the early years, incorporating elements of Swedish and Indian massage techniques to soothe and relax both parent and baby.
After giving birth at The Portland Hospital in April, Paula’s baby Valentina started having digestive issues and colic. Her paediatrician at the Portland, Dr Maalouf, suggested the baby massage classes as a possible way to help ease her discomfort.
“Baby massage has helped me further bond with Valentina. It has become our one on one time with no toys or other distractions,” says Paula.
“I typically talk about our day during the massage, and she just loves it. It helps her to relax and it alleviates any discomfort she might have. Also, the skin to skin contact makes both of us calm.”
Teresa Walsh, Midwife at The Portland Hospital and leader of the massage sessions, explains that baby massage techniques mutually benefit both parent and baby.
“The programme uses a combination of Swedish and Indian massage traditions and incorporates some principles from yoga and reflexology – but in a very easy to learn way.”
“There is no need to be a trained therapist – you will learn intuitively what your baby likes and soon notice how baby communicates what they like too. It is communicating with your little baby using non-verbal means.” says Teresa.
“The Infant Massage Instructors are trained by the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) a worldwide association that offers training of a very high standard.”
Paula found zen in her weekly classes with Teresa during the first few weeks of motherhood. “Teresa was always lovely and her calm and warm nature made me feel so cared for. She also provided extremely useful advice and guidance regarding baby massage but also any other questions I had.”
“Most importantly, the course helped Valentina and I further bond and gave me a sense of confidence as a mother when I experienced the soothing and positive effect the massage had on her.”
The classes can either be taken during a two hour intense session, or over a series of four weeks. The four week programme will provide more time with the instructor to reflect and discuss your baby’s reaction to massage strokes each week.
