Consultant Led Care

Some Simple Steps

Simple steps to Consultant led care at The Portland Hospital

Step 1
You must find a Consultant who has admitting privileges at The Portland Hospital. You may wish to contact several Consultants to discuss your personal birth preferences, their fees, consulting room location, qualifications, gender, languages spoken or other criteria to ensure you have the most appropriate Consultant for your birth.

Please remember that the Consultants are independent of the hospital and we can not recommend. You may choose a Consultant through personal recommendation by family or friends or your GP may also refer you to a Consultant.

Step 2
Your Consultant will book you into The Portland Hospital for the birth of your baby. It is advisable if you have a private medical insurance policy to check the circumstances under which you may be covered for maternity care, obtaining confirmation in writing which will be later requested by the hospital admissions department.

Step 3
Your Consultant will discuss the fetal medicine services and ultrasound scans that you require during your pregnancy. The Portland Hospital is able to provide all medically required scans and tests in our Fetal Medicine and Obstetric Ultrasound Department.

Step 4
Once you have booked under the care of your Consultant, you may wish to consider booking your antenatal classes. We offer a range of classes for you to choose from including childbirth preparation advice and antenatal yoga. Click here to find out more information about our classes.

Step 5
Please come and take a look around the Maternity Unit to put your mind at ease and discuss any questions that you may have. Alternatively, take a look at our virtual tour and our frequently asked questions.

Step 6
Mothers-to-be who are booked under the care of a Consultant Obstetrician are invited to attend the Midwifery Booking Clinic. This is a pre-assessment clinic which provides the opportunity to meet a member of the midwifery team prior to admission. The midwife will offer a wealth of information on nutrition, health and wellbeing throughout pregnancy, and discuss plans for delivery at The Portland Hospital.

Step 7
Anaesthetic Clinic
Mothers-to-be may be referred by their Consultant Obstetrician to meet a Consultant Anaesthetist prior to delivery if they wish to further discuss pain relief options. The Consultant Anaesthetist will undertake a health assessment and advise you on the available medical options.
